Bad synchros. Go to a chevy dealer and ask them for GM syncromesh. Drain your tranny oil and refill with the syncromesh. Problem solved for awhile. It should cost you about $30 for 2 quarts or so. Alot cheaper than buying a new tranny.

Yeah but it would end up costing more than just buying a used tranny. Im assuming you wouldnt be able to do that job yourself so..... you would have to pay labor too. Which is say on avg $65, you figure its an hr to take the tranny off. Then take the tranny apart, another hour, then put everything back together, another hour, and then put the tranny back in the car another hour. Theres 4 hours just for labor, which is like $260 and then the parts which will be like $250. then your looking at like $510. Who knows how long the rest of the tranny will last after you fix the syncros. Also price wise I was pretty conservative. You'll probably end up spending more towards the $75-80 range for labor. Parts may cost more too since they are BMW. You can probably get a used tranny for like $350. Or spend the $30 and let the tranny last another 25k miles and save up for the used tranny during that time.

last time i was at the bmw dealer in cuse getting parts for my old 735i the labor rate up there they said was 80 dollars an hour. bmw parts are very exspensive atleast for that old 735 they were... just to give you a hint the powersteering line i need for it was like 300 dollars it was all special order i made one with copper for that price...

Have fun getting raped at a dealership. $20 will fix your problem for awhile, trust me. Many people on here can attest to what syncromesh can do to a grinding tranny.

Read my above post, theres really is no positive answers, but to put it into perspective my old 02 VW GTI was grinding from 1st-2nd-3rd gears. Even if I shifted kinda slow. I put the syncromesh in and it NEVER ground again. I put about 20k miles on it after that and I beat the oatmeal out of the tranny. It never gave me one problem, and the new owner has not had any problems either. not too mention every honda I have owned has gotten it since most Hondas have a grind from 1-2-3 gear at high rpms. Its your tranny, but if it were mine before throwing a ton of money out I would at least change the fluid like Im telling you.

So you get a grind when you shift from 3-4th? Can you move the shift lever at all? Can you shift through other gears?
